St. John the Evangelist School in Carmichael, California, has a rich and vibrant history that began in 1961 with the founding vision of Monsignor James Kenny. The school first welcomed students with the guidance and dedication of the Sisters of Mercy from Kerry, Ireland, who taught grades one through six. This strong foundation expanded with the addition of seventh and eighth grades in 1962 and 1963, respectively.
Our commitment to early education grew with the introduction of a kindergarten class in 1983 and an extension program in 1985. Recognizing the importance of early childhood education, we proudly established our preschool programs for 3- and 4-year-olds in 2012.
Throughout our history, we have been blessed with the support and leadership of many devoted priests. Today, Father Dominic Savio Potnuru, MSFS, serves as our Pastor, and Father Amar Nagothu, MSFS, as our Parochial Vicar. They are joined by Deacon Jack Wilson and Deacon Keith Johnson, who also provide invaluable support to our school community.
In June 1990, we marked a significant transition when the Sisters of Mercy withdrew the last two Sisters from our faculty. Since then, our dedicated and credentialed lay teachers have taken up the mantle, ensuring that our preschool through eighth-grade students receive a top-quality Catholic education. Our faculty and staff are passionately committed to nurturing the academic and spiritual growth of every student, continuing the legacy of excellence that St. John the Evangelist School is known for.
